Practice conversations before they occur!

Social Niceties (SoNi) has been developed to simulate common social interactions and allow for practicing conversations before they happen in real life. The application comprises numerous videos featuring actors engaging in typical social scenarios. The learner is prompted to respond, while the teacher, parent, or speech pathologist can demonstrate the appropriate reply. SoNi functions as the conversational partner, enabling the teacher to solely focus on modeling responses. This method reduces the risk of inadvertently adopting echolalic responses and confusion regarding which parts of the dialogue to repeat or respond to.

The teacher can manage the videos and reinforcements through a Bluetooth keyboard connected to the device. Alternatively, users can swipe right to access navigation buttons if a keyboard is not preferred.

LIST OF KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

• Backspace or ‘H’: return to Home screen
• Spacebar: advance to the next video and reinforcement
• 'N' or Right arrow: move to the next video
• 'R' or Down arrow: replay the video
• 'E' or Up arrow: play the reinforcement (i.e., play the Effect)

It is recommended to administer lessons via a Bluetooth keyboard to give students privacy in their interactions with actors. In the absence of a keyboard, users can swipe right on the video screen to reveal navigation buttons.

WORKING WITH A STUDENT

Commence a video and allow the student to respond. Exercise patience, as the student may require time for contemplation. If you are content with their response to the actor, press the 'Spacebar' or 'Reward & Next' button. Should you wish to enhance the student's response, offer feedback and press the 'R' key or 'Repeat' button to replay the video.
